Martindale is a unit for quantifying the abrasion resistance of textiles, especially when used for upholstery.
Martindale method is a rub test for abrasion & wear resistance of textiles. A testing equipment of Martindale method simulats the natural wear of a textile fabric, by rubbing the specimen against a standard abrasive surface with a specified force. The test equipment works at intervals of 5000 rounds of smooth grinding. The higher the total cycle numbers leading to the specified degree of wear, the stronger the wear resistance of the material.
Martindale tester is used to determine the pilling degree and abrasion resistance of various fabrics and other materials under light pressure, especially thin cotton, linen, silk fabrics.
