Down jacket is warm and light, a major choice of winter clothing. But no matter of which brand or price, is there a headache for it, Down Leakage. The difference is only the amount, more or less. So what exactly causes down leakage?
"Down" leakage is a less accurate term, because it is more likely that feathers with sharp quills, rather than soft down, will drill out the fabric. Therefore "Feather" leakage is more accurate.
1, Down & feather quality: If the filled down chosen for the down jacket is of low grade, less down and more feathers with long and sharp quills, it is more likely to drill out. And this is the main cause;
2, Fabric quality: If the fabric covering the down is of low density, with sparse warp and weft, its low tightness will allow more leakage;
3, Needle hole: If the sewing needle is too thick, it will leave large holes, when the surrounding fabric and sewing thread fail to make up for the holes;
4, Sewing speed: Friction heat of high speed sewing makes the partial fabric around the needle eyes harden and lose elasticity, and results in failure to fill the holes;
5, Stitch density: The spacing between sewing stitches is too large, not dense enough, and the seams become loose and sliding;
6, Sewing thread: The sewing thread is too coarse and hairy, likely to adhere and bring out the down beside it, especially when the down is held down by the thread during sewing;
7, Electrostatic effect: The accumulation of electrostatic effect in dry environment sucks out the down;
8, Leakage proof finish: Lack of proper process for down leakage proof.
To sum up, there are complex reasons for down leakage, while it is the main dissatisfaction of consumers, so the test on down proof of down jacket (products) is very important.
